WHAT IS ANXIETY?   Anxiety is the combining of these two symptoms - worry and stress.   Worry is the cognitive element of anxiety and stress is the physiological response, which means that anxiety is experienced in both the mind and body.   Stress is a natural response to a threat and anxiety has the same reaction but there is no threat. Worry happens in the mind; stress happens in the body and anxiety happens in the mind and the body and can be likened to that of a response to a false alarm.   At present, anxiety is attributed to being the greatest cause of depression worldwide, according to the World Health Organization….and the figures are rising. Anxiety can be the term used for a number of disorders that cause feelings of nervousness, fear, apprehension and worry.   Everyone will feel anxious at some time in their life…anxiety is normal when faced with things that might push us outside our comfort zone. It could be for example, having to stand up and give a presentation in front of others, and this causes us to stress and worry but once this challenge is over the anxiety disappears.   In our ancestor’s time anxiety came in those times of ‘fight and flight,’ those life-saving situations needed to protect them from ferocious animals….and adrenaline was released to create a sudden surge of energy, enabling them to flee from danger.   But now in our life today, it is triggered by emotionally challenged situations and the symptoms may include…. headaches, dizziness, muscle tension, pain, shaking, hyperventilating(over-breathing) feeling hot and flustered, nausea, light headedness, numbness, tingling in the face, tension in the chest. Panic attacks, phobias, compulsive thoughts and behaviours to name a few.   Or it could be anxiety trauma from a past event…. often causing flashbacks. There might be trauma, regret, remorse or guilt from the past. Lots of things can trigger an anxiety attack ….could be a sound or smell, a memory. Maybe currently it could be financial stress, relationship problems or family issues. It can be a learned behavior from copying others around us …. could be from a parent, friend, a relative, or a partner. In general, anxiety is an over-stimulation of the nervous system caused by those events in the past, what is happening at the moment in the present, or imagined concerns about what is going to happen in the future.   Because of the detrimental effect uncontrolled anxiety has on our mental health it is important to learn techniques to help control anxiety and the emotional response. Hypnosis can be used very effectively to eliminate anxiety and to provide coping tools and techniques that can help with self-control and teaches how to use relaxation to calm the mind and body.   A professional hypnotherapist can help you to identify what triggers your anxiety, to help you let go of the things that don’t really matter and to be able to focus your energy on what you can control…. your mind. The techniques will help you to live in a calmness and relaxed state and to be able to get rid of the day-to-day stresses that build-up in your mind and body. The one thing we have full control over is what we choose to focus on and what we do focus on is what we will get more of.   Benefits Of Having Greater Control Over Anxiety:
